To @david's point, I’ve found cucumbers work best. Slice them thin and use a spoon or pick to gently lift them out.

I use a combination of manual removal and veggie bait. I recommend manual removal for pet stails.

@mary, definitely! Using a timer for your aquarium lights to simulate a regular day-night cycle helps reduce stress and promotes healthier fish.

I’ve heard that some fish never stop swimming even when they sleep. How does that work?

It really depends on the sturdiness of your dresser. A 12-gallon tank filled with water, substrate, and decorations (use live plants please) will weigh around 120-150 pounds. Combined with the weight of your existing 5-gallon tank, that could be a significant load on your dresser. I’d recommend checRead more

I’d recommend checking the weight capacity of your dresser or considering a stand specifically designed for aquariums.

Hmm...Interesting. I think you're doing something wrong. You generally don't have to replace the substrate in an aquascape very often, if at all. It's more about regular maintenance. Here, this is what I do, and my tank is around 4 years old and it’s still in pretty good shape.

    1. Regular water changes to keep the waste levels down.
    2. Vacuum the substrate during water changes to remove debris and excess waste.
    3. Use root tabs for heavy root feeders to ensure they get enough nutrients without overloading the water column.

If you’re seeing excessive buildup, you might be overfeeding or have an overstocked tank.

What materials should I use in my DIY pond to help hold the water?

I've worked with EPDM rubber liners and PVC pond liners. Both work, but EPDM rubber is a bit costly. 45 mil EPDM rubber liner is what I use most. Tip: Just make sure to properly line the hole you dig with sand or old carpet to protect the liner from punctures.
