First saltwater aquarium? Uff, been there🤐

This is the standard process, you can follow it with no doubts.

      1. Start with reverse osmosis/deionized (RO/DI) water to avoid impurities.
      2. Get a high-quality marine salt mix from your local fish store or online.
      3. Use a clean container, add the RO/DI water, and slowly mix in the salt. Follow the instructions on the salt mix packaging for the correct ratio.
      4. Use a refractometer or hydrometer to ensure the salinity is around 1.025 specific gravity.
      5. Allow the mix to aerate and sit for at least 24 hours before adding it to your tank.

I use a powerhead and heater in my mixing bucket to match the tank’s conditions before adding the new water. Works like a charm!

      Great advice david

Also, make sure the water temperature is close to your tank’s temp before mixing and ensure you have good water circulation during the aeration period.

        Want to add this:
NEVER use tap water. Even if it’s treated, it can still have impurities that harm your fish and corals. Always go for RO/DI water.

I’ve found that mixing the salt in smaller amounts works best. Like, if you have a 5-gallon bucket, add a bit of salt, stir, and then add more. This prevents clumping and ensures an even mix. Don’t dump all the salt at once!

I’ve been using conditioned tap water for years without issues. Just treat it with a good dechlorinator.

While that might work for you, tap water can vary greatly in quality and consistency. It’s safer to use RO/DI water to avoid potential problems.

I messed up my first batch by not letting it sit long enough. My fish were stressed for days. Don’t rush it!

And don’t forget to always have extra mixed water ready for emergencies or water changes. You’ll thank yourself later!
